What Are the Health Benefit of Acai Berries/Juice?

Acai Berries and Acai Berry Juice -- What Are the Health Benefits?

Have you heard about the acai berry? Do you want to know more about the health benefits of acai berries and berry juice?
Acai berries are highly touted by marketers who say it’s one of the elite superfoods with anti-aging and weight loss properties. But do scientific studies support these claims of acai benefits?

What is the acai berry?
The acai berry is an inch-long reddish, purple fruit. It comes from the acai palm tree (Euterpe oleracea), which is native to Central and South America. It is a relative of the blueberry, cranberry, and other dark purple fruits.

Research on the acai berry has focused on its possible antioxidant activity. Theoretically, that activity may help prevent diseases caused by oxidative stress such as heart disease and cancer.

Is the acai berry healthy?
Acai contains several substances called anthocyanins and flavonoids.

The word anthocyanin comes from two Greek words meaning “plant” and “blue.” Anthocyanins are responsible for the red, purple, and blue hues in many fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Foods that are richest in anthocyanins -- such as blueberries, red grapes, red wine, and acai -- are very strongly colored, ranging from deep purple to black.

Anthocyanins and flavonoids are powerful antioxidants that help defend the body against life's stressors. They also play a role in the body's cell protection system. Free radicals are harmful byproducts produced by the body. Eating a diet rich in antioxidants may interfere with aging and the disease process by neutralizing free radicals.

By lessening the destructive power of free radicals, antioxidants may help reduce the risk of some diseases, such as heart disease and cancer.

Are there known health benefits of acai berries?
Some studies show that acai fruit pulp has a very high antioxidant capacity with even more antioxidant content than cranberry, raspberry, blackberry, strawberry, or blueberry. Studies are ongoing.

Can acai berries boost weight loss?
Scientists are learning more about the functional power of superfoods, such as the acai berry. Although acai is touted in some weight loss products, few studies have tested the benefit of acai in promoting weight loss.

For now, plenty of research supports eating a diet rich in antioxidants. There’s no doubt that berries and other fruits are a key part of any healthy diet promoting weight loss. The jury’s still out on whether there is something special about acai’s ability to shed excess pounds.

Do acai berries and acai juice have any side effects?
If you have pollen allergies or have a known hypersensitivity to acai or similar berries, you may want to avoid this fruit. When eaten in moderate amounts, though, acai is likely safe.

O.N.E. Amazon Acai and Free Radicals

Acai Berry Juice

According to data from the USDA, the Acai berries ORAC value (antioxidant capabilities) is 200-750% higher then any other fruit or vegetable. Science has linked Free Radicals as forces to such diseases as, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, aging, and many more.

"Don't underestimate the threat free radicals pose to our health. Scientists now believe that free radicals are casual factors in nearly every known disease, from heart disease to arthritis to cancer to cataracts. In fact, free radicals are a major culprit in the aging process itself. By controlling free radicals, anti-oxidants can make the difference between life and death, as well as influence how fast and how well we age"

A quote from Lester Packer, Head of Packer Laboratory -Dept. of Molecular and Cell Biology from, The University of Calf. at Berkeley.

So the evidence of what free radicals can do is now a fact, proven by modern science. Also proven is the fact that antioxidants are the solution to controlling and eliminating them, and preventing the damage they do to our bodies.

What are free radicals and healthy cells

Cells are made up of many atoms. When these atoms are healthy, they make an exact copy of themselves to keep the body healthy. What makes a healthy atom is the fact they have paired (2) electrons. Free radicals are atoms that only have one (1) electron. They go around stealing electrons from healthy cells, thus destroying and damaging them. When these damaged cells replicate, they make an exact copy of an un-healthy cell, thus leading to disease and premature aging.

Through modern science, we know that almost all known diseases and ailments are a direct result of what we are feeding, or not feeding are bodies.

O.N.E. Amazon Acai

If you've watched television lately, you may have seen one of the many ads promoting various brands of açaí berry juice. While this “perfect potion” is new to the United States, it has been familiar in other parts of the world for hundreds of years.

Açaí (a-sigh-ee) palm trees are members of the genus Euterpe and grow mostly in Central and South American rain forests. The fruit is a dietary staple in the Amazon region, where various species are used in herbal remedies for diarrhea, jaundice, fever, skin ulcers, and tonics to enrich the blood. Euterpe oleracea is the variety that's causing all the buzz.1

Background
A classic palm, the açaí tree grows as tall as 80 feet. Its multiple long, thin trunks have branches near the top that support long, ribbonlike leaves. Dangling from the branches are clusters of three to eight deep-purple berries—so dark that they look almost black. Each berry is about the size of a blueberry and is composed of a small amount of pulp surrounding a large seed.1

Scientific evidence

Chemical analysis finds açaí juice to be an excellent source of essential fatty acids, fiber, and antioxidants. The National Institute on Aging has developed oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) values to measure the antioxidant capacity of various foods.4 With a rating of 161,400 units/100 g, açaí has the highest ORAC value of any food tested to date and is 10-30 times more powerful than red wine by volume.5

This rich antioxidant activity has spurred intense research into açaí's potential for preventing numerous diseases. A University of Florida study showed that açaí extract triggered a self-destruct response in up to 86% of leukemia cells in vitro.6 In a rat study at the University of Rio de Janeiro, açaí extract induced long-lasting endothelium-dependent vasodilatation, which is strongly linked to improved cardiovascular function.7

Meanwhile, in a randomized, placebo-controlled trial, 12 healthy volunteers ingested a standardized açaí extract. When serum antioxidant levels were sampled one and two hours later, the concentrations had definitely increased at each interval.8

Other touted and likely physiologic results from this berry are increased energy, improved mental clarity, improved GI function, better glycemic control for diabetic patients, improved cholesterol balance, and a slowing of cellular aging. All these benefits have yet to be proven, but other high-antioxidant products are credited with these effects.

O.N.E. Amazon Acai

Açaí Is Nature's Top Superfood Based On Antioxidants
Author: Haley 22

Dec

The Amazon which is called the earth's lungs shelters many species of living things. Its large green mushroom-like canopy produces air that the rest of the world breathes. A tiny berry fruit known as Açaí that comes from palm trees in the Amazon river banks distinguishes itself from several wild fruits. Acai berry has become a fast-growing herbal therapy in the world. It's acai's rich concentration of anti-oxidants, among all the nutrients and vitamins it contains, that makes it a wonder medicine and super food too. Dr. Nicholas Perricone, being a world specialist on anti-aging matter, touted acai as "super food." This added to its rising popularity outside the US and South America.

This anti-oxidant concentration is what makes Acai juice strike out all toxins from your body. Through being an aid in metabolism and digestion, acai purifies your system. Anti-oxidants are known to be free radicals or radical cells' nemesis. You get these free radicals from the air, from stress, and they even get to you from food. WrinkIed skin, back pains, black spots, and other signs of aging can be brought on by these radical cells. Cancer can be a result of too many radical cells in the body. Acai berry contains a huge amount of anthocyanin which is good but other than that it contains flavonoid-like compounds that help to fight against radical cells. That's why acai floored a lot of fruits when tested for anti-oxidants and potency. Compared to mulberry, noni, guava, pineapple, cupuaco, and even mangosteen, its scores were better.

The anti-oxidants in Açaí travel fast in our bloodstreams; thus, it's able to get through radical cells' plasma and membrane within 120 minutes after drinking it. Using it is not the same as waiting for 14 months to pass when you want to strike out dark skin blemishes by using night cream or when you use Botox to tighten your wrinkled face.

However, being a super food doesn't only mean having mighty anti-oxidants. Acai earned the prefix "super" since it contains a lot of nutrients and vitamins that only tons of food sources can provide. Well, you see, if you needed to keep your blood cholesterol down, you go for fish since it has the healthy fats Omega 3, 6, and 9. As years gone by and you're more feeble to fight off diseases, you boost your immune system as you increase your vitamin C content by eating a lot of oranges and other citrus fruits. With acai berry, it only requires a healthy acai food supplement or an acai health juice and it's the same as you gained all of them.

Brazilian Acai Absorbs Much Better Than Any Other Fruit

Posted by Picasa

Green Bay, WI (PRWEB) November 14, 2008 -- Though very little research has been done on the Amazonian wonder berry, its benefits are widely raved about from personalities to medical experts. The first of its research conducted by the Texas AgriLife Research scientists have found out that the acai (ah-sigh-EE) berry has the ability to be absorbed in the human body when consumed both as juice and pulp. This finding was recently published in an issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Acai Berry Goodness
The research states that the Brazilian acai berry absorbed much better than any other fruit or food because of its high content of antioxidants. Because of this one super benefit, the berry is heavily marketed in the U.S. as a health food and has even entered the Dr. Perricone's list of super foods. The research conducted involved 12 healthy volunteers who consumed a single serving of acai juice or pulp.

Principal investigator Dr. Susanne Talcott said "Acai is naturally low in sugar, and the flavor is described as a mixture of red wine and chocolate, so what more would you want from a fruit?" Talcott, who also is assistant professor with the Texas A&M University's nutrition and food science department, said that previous studies have shown the ability of the human body to absorb target antioxidants (from other produce), but "no one had really tested to see if acai antioxidants are absorbed in humans."

Since being touted as a metabolism booster, weight reducer and athletic enhancer, sales of acai products have dramatically increased in the U.S. These berries are considered exotic- being harvested in the Brazilian rainforest from acai palms that may reach heights in excess of 60 feet - one of the same palms used to harvest edible hearts of palm. Talcott noted that the size of the fruit is similar to a large blueberry with only the outermost layers of the fruit and the pulp surrounding the seed are edible.

Talcott and her co-researcher and husband Dr. Steve Talcott began studying the palm- berry in 2001. His first scientific report on acai, apparently the first such study in English, was published in 2004. Initial research done on the acai was done to examine the antioxidant and nutritional values of the pulp and juice, with later studies focused on the benefits of the berry in fighting cancer. Since the benefits of fighting cancer was found, the researchers then decided to find out whether those elements were actually being absorbed into the human body or being eliminated unused as waste. Says Steve Talcott, "Like vitamin C, the body can only absorb so much at a time."

O.N.E. Amazon Acai

A Super Food Juice You Do Not Want To Miss Out On
Acai fruit juice is a super food juice that comes from the rainforest. It is made from the acai berry and grows on an Amazon palm tree. While it has been used for many years by Brazilian people, it is slowly making its way around the world. There are several benefits to drinking this juice including its incredible taste and many health benefits.

Acai fruit juice is considered a super food because it contains everything you need naturally from the berry. It is packed with nutrients and can build up your immunity tremendously. Much like other fruits, you can and should include it in your daily diet.

To many people’s surprise, this fruit is extremely high in essential fatty acids. However, essential fatty acids are good for the body because they support the cardiovascular, reproductive, immune, and nervous system. By attaining the essential fatty acids they can repair the body at a cellular level. This helps enable the cells to obtain optimum nutrition and get eliminate waste products.

If cholesterol is a problem for your health, this super food juice is perfect for you. This juice has a class of flavonoids called anthocyanins. These flavonoids are phytochemicals, which are similar to those found in red wine. However, this purple juice contains 10 to 30 times more anthocyanins than what is found in red wine. Because of this, it is great for balancing cholesterol levels.

Acai fruit juice is also beneficial to help you get your daily vitamins. It is packed with a wide variety of vitamins that you typically would not receive with anything else. Some vitamins you will get include Vitamin B1, B2, B3, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, and Calcium. In addition, it is also rich in iron and fiber.

Some other benefits you will get from this super food juice are that it has 10 times the antioxidants of grapes and almost twice the amount of antioxidants as blueberries. In fact, it has one of the highest antioxidants of anything that is on the market. It has 33 times the antioxidant level as in red wine grapes. So it is a rich and fruitful drink you do not want to leave out of your diet.

So how does all of this benefit your daily life? Obviously it will build up your immune system and supply you with more than enough vitamins needed. But in addition, it will increase your stamina, give you better sleep, better digestion, and an improved mental focus. With these kinds of benefits, acai fruit juice is certainly not a juice you want to pass up.

O.N.E. Amazon Acai contains the necessary Omega-3's your body needs!

The typical North American diet contains a whopping 80-110g of fat daily. However, even with all that fat, most of us are deficient in omega-3, the most essential fat.

Scientific evidence continues to show omega-3 fats, particularly DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid), help protect your heart, joints and brain. Unfortunately, ninety percent of the omega-3 most of us regularly consume is plant-based ALA (Alpha-Linolenic Acid). ALA must be converted to DHA and EPA, an inefficient process for many people. For example, flax seed contains omega-3 but does not provide DHA or EPA. Most adults would need to consume 10-40 grams of flaxseed oil to produce just 0.2 grams of DHA. Therefore, it is important to understand that not all omega-3 fats provide you with DHA and EPA.

The average intake of DHA and EPA in the United States is about 100 mg per day, equivalent to half a can of sardines every ten days. This is a far cry from the recommended 1-2 grams per day. Another study found that men with the highest levels of dietary omega-3 fatty acids had an 81% lower risk of dying suddenly compared to men with the lowest levels.

What Are Free Radicals?

Adapted from an article in The Share Guide July/August 2008 by Gary Null, Ph.D.

Free radicals are molecules that have an unpaired electron, which makes them capable of damaging cells, tissues, and organs. These dangerous molecules can weaken many vital aspects of body functioning, including our cardiovascular, neurological, and immune systems.

A growing body of research shows that free radicals contribute to the aging process and to a long list of disorders, including heart disease and cancer, which now rank as two of the leading killers in our society.

The Origin of Free Radicals
Once a free radical if formed, it will try to restore its balance by stealing an electron from another molecule. Every time a molecule loses an electron, it may damage a healthy molecule in the process. As a result, the body's normal function will be impaired. A single free radical can destroy an enzyme, a protein molecule, or an entire cell.

Free radicals can stem from external pollutants or from our internal biochemical processes. The main sources are the environment, internal production, and pathology, stressors on the body systems.

The environment is full of toxins that either contain free radicals themselves, or generate free radicals after we breathe or swallow the substances. Free radicals form chain reactions. An initial free radical may form a second unbalanced free radical, which produces a third, and so on. If this chain reaction is not stopped, cellular damage may occur.

Assisting The Body's Defense Mechanisms
We must continually strive to balance the events taking place in the molecules of our bodies. The foods we eat and the drinks we drink are our first line of defense against free radicals, because they provide the body with nutritional support. We must obtain an adequate supply of the vitamins that contribute to the body's defenses against oxidant imbalance.
We need to take antioxidants, most commonly vitamins C, E, and A, such as those found in One Natural Experience drinks: O.N.E. Amazon Acai and O.N.E. Cashew Fruit...

O.N.E. Amazon Acai, the amazing "superfruit"

Why is this fruit causing so much of a stir among nutrition experts? For starters, the Acai berry has twice the antioxidant content of blueberries and ten times that of red grapes. These antioxidants found in Acai are more long lasting in effect as well. The Acai contains a lot of fatty acids, including oleic acid, which can reduce cholesterol levels. The University of Florida has done studies on the fruit, finding that the Acai berry also has compounds called polyphenolics which can slow down the progress of leukemia. The Acai berry is at the top of the “super foods” list because it: has anti-inflammatory properties, lowers cholesterol, helps your body burn excess fat, regulates metabolism, lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, protects against cancer and heart disease, promotes digestive health and gives you energy too!

O.N.E.™ Amazon Açaí is a delicious and healthy natural beverage made from fresh Açaí fruit grown naturally (wild crafted) in the middle of the Amazon Rainforest.

What are Antioxidants?

Antioxidants are dietary substances including some nutrients such as beta carotene, Vitamins C & E, and selenium that can prevent damage to your body cells, or repair damage that has been done. Antioxidants work by significantly slowing or preventing the oxidative – or damage from oxygen – process caused by substances called free radicals that can lead to cell dysfunction and the onset of problems like heart disease and diabetes. Antioxidants may also improve immune function.
